ABSTRACT
The article emphasizes the need to consider the historical context when analyzing educational policy as a research topic, since different definitions of the State, politics and education result in different policy formulations and educational interventions in society. Using the approach of historical-dialectical materialism as a scientific method, through bibliographic and documentary research, the text synthetically analyzes the main phenomena that led to the political emancipation of Brazil and the formation of the new independent nation-state, focusing on education policy as object of research. In the final considerations, it is concluded that, from the theoretical-methodological perspective of historical-dialectical materialism, the object of research must always be considered within the scope of the historical process, in intimate relationship with its totality.
