ABSTRACT
This work aims at discussing independence and education in Brazil from the history of Pará State in Portuguese America, between 1755 and 1840. This was an 85-years history marked by bloody conflicts, in which education was used to change native populations into useful citizens of a distant homeland. In this context, the Cabano Movement is an important event of resetting undone political freedom.
