SUMMARY
This paper analyzes the use of newspapers as a source for studying the history of school uniforms at Liceu Maranhense (1894-1898), with an emphasis on analyzing representations. The objective is to understand to what extent these discourses position the press as a privileged source for investigating school material culture. To this end, the newspapers Pacotilha and Diário do Maranhão were investigated, whose interpretation of the news is based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of Cultural History. Materials available in the Digital Newspaper Library of the National Library and works by authors such as Chartier (1991), Barros (2019), Pesavento (2012), Castellanos e Carvalho (2024), Castellanos (2012a; 2012b), Castro (2013), Julia (2001), Ribeiro e Silva (2012) and Dussel (2016) were consulted. The results point to the relevance of periodicals in the deconstruction of historically naturalized objects in the context of school material culture, exposing in more detail unique moments of transformation of decisions related to the idealization and appropriation of clothing.
