Open-access In favor of utility and autonomy: education for the Deaf in Brazil in the 1930s

Abstract

The historiography about the education for the Deaf in Brazil reveals that educational projects have advocated different paths for the social inclusion of these individuals. Among them, the labor was considered by many educators as the means by which the Deaf could obtain their financial autonomy and could be integrated as a useful member of society. In this context, this research aimed to analyze how the pedagogical proposals for the Deaf were organized in the Brazilian context in the 1930s and how the labor was consolidated as one of the main objectives of this education. The work is contextualized in the field of Linguistic Historiography and is a bibliographic and documentary research. Among the results obtained, it is observed that the educational proposal for the Deaf was summarized to teaching a form of communication and a profession to provide their rapid inclusion in the labor market, so that they could be productive for society.
