Abstract
This study aims to analyze the pedagogical proposal by Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez, a nationalistic musician who was based at the Instituto Nacional de Música and the Universidade do Distrito Federal - UDF - in Rio de Janeiro, capital city of the Republic of that time. Research for this project is fundamentally based on the magazine Illustração Musical (1930-1931). As a result of this project, it would seem that Lorenzo Fernandez proposed that music education in public schools be supported by specialized teacher training courses that boasted a consistent musical and pedagogical emphasis, a proposal that depended on the then Brazilian government's investments.
