Open-access The Worker-Priests in Two Eras: The French (1943-1954) and Brazilian (1961-1976) Missions Connected

Abstract:

This study aims to understand the missionary movement of the worker-priests that took place in two different times and spaces. First in France, in the early 1940s. Then in Brazil, from the first half of the 1960s. The aim is to draw connections, continuities, similarities and differences between the two missions carried out at two different moments during the Cold War. The article shows how the experience of proletarianization was key for the creation of bonds of solidarity between the Catholic Church and the working-class, as well as for the formation of the so-called Basic Ecclesial Communities (CEBs) in Brazil, which were so important for social movements in the 1970s.
