The midwife Madam Durocher’s project about emancipation of slaves in the Brazilian empire crisis

Abstract

Madam Durocher, a famous midwife who lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, wrote and published, in the 1870s, a booklet in which she approached the problem of the slave’s emancipation. In this text, result of broader research, I’ve tried to analyze this document and to get into a wider perspective involving the politic debate that since mid-1860s dedicated the building solutions aiming at the extinctions of slavery. I also researched Madam Durocher’s professional and politics peculiarities showing her political conservative positions and movements by the imperial court contrary to the prescribed social order. Lastly, I tried to emphasize the rooting of conservative positions regarding the abolition slavery and the emergence of a racial policy represented in his text.
