Abstract
This article aims to analyze the role of the Jesuits in the censorship of printed matter in Portugal in the second half of the seventeenth century. Through the legislation of the period, published in the Chronological Collection of Portuguese Law, which regulated the circulation and production of printed matter, and Jesuit letters sought to discuss the interests and negotiations of book publishing, seeking to approach the world of paper. Through the letters, the priests of the Society of Jesus related the problems they faced in the publication of their books, the censorship of their texts, changes in their impressions, as well as their opinions about the works of other religious.
