Abstract

This article aims to understand some political events of the First Republic through the literary gaze of Lima Barreto. In a relationship between allegory and history, we seek to understand how the writer works the political world from the figurative, satire and classic themes of universal literature such as the banquet. The master chronicle that will be analyzed here is Coisas do Jambon, also published in the Careta magazine in 1921. Through its allegorical traces, we will unveil other testimonies and apprehend the threads that sew the particularity of Brazilian history. Two historical episodes intersect in the allegorized images made by the author: The arrival of Albert I, king of Belgium, to Brazil, in 1920; and the presidential dispute between Artur Bernardes and Nilo Peçanha, in 1921.
