Challenges of feminisms in Brazil Contemporary History

Abstract

This article addresses the relations of Brazilian feminisms with leftist and rightist political forces and discourses that massively emerged at the beginning of the millennium and that have been identified as populisms. During the so-called “pink wave” in Brazil from 2004 to 2016, four governments were elected due to the strong demand of inclusive social policies for the least favored layers of society. Other political right-wing and conservative forces emerged after the parliamentary and media coup of 2016, which was disguised as the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff. That situation also allowed feminisms to emerge, having great visibility, especially since 2011, in demonstrations and organizations that are quite diversified, such as the “Sluts March”, the “March of the Daisies” (peasant women), occupations of schools and universities, the “March of Black Women”, the “Feminist Spring”, “women’s 8M strike”, among others. Our objective is to debate the challenges presented by feminisms in the encounters with leftist or rightist political forces, and what is their political role in contemporary Brazil, analyzing the history of the present.
