Baptists in the Vargas Era: from the Revolution of 30 to the proscenium of the Estado Novo.

Abstract

The presente article analyzes, from the history of religions, the ideas and attitudes of religious of the Brazilian Baptist Convention between the Revolution of 30 and the proscenium of the Estado Novo The purposen is to understand oscillations between the liberal thought supported by the Baptist denomination in the period between 1930 and 1937. It addresses inflectional stances in the light of the ideological enemies of the Baptists, especially of communism and integralism. It presents narratives of anti-Catholicism, the defense of secularism during the promulgation of the 1934 Constitution, and the preparatory climate of support for the coup of the Estado Novo in 1937. At the center of the documentary corpus of this article is O Jornal Batista as the official body of the Brazilian Baptist Convention.
