ABSTRACT
There is no unanimous opinion in the historiography about popular participation in the so called “revolution of 1930”. This article, using press, judicial and diplomatic documents, addresses the topic, emphasizing the link between the political crisis of 1929-30 and popular agitation against Linha Circular, a company of urban services at Salvador. On the 4th and 5th of October 1930, the beginning of the revolution, the city was shaken by the Quebra-Bondes, a popular protest against the company, which caused losses estimated between 1 and 2 million dollars. The riot expressed the possibility of the labors and Black people radicalize the revolution, marking it with the repudiation of the Circular’s responsibility in a daily life marked by discrimination and exploitation.
