To narrate lives, honoring the memory of the important people of the nation and Rio Grande do Norte: an essay about biographical production of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Norte (1902-1927)

Abstract

Abstract: The Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Norte was created on March 29, 1902. It was founded with the purpose of organizing a documentary archive for the state and building a historical memory for Rio Grande do Norte. Throughout its 25 years of existence, the association has developed several intellectual strategies, among them the production of biographies. In this sense, the present article has to analyze the function of biographies in the construction of historical memory norte-rio-grandense. The documentary corpus examined in this article is constituted, mainly, by the magazines of the Institute, published between 1903 and 1927.
