In this article we look at public education in government Graccho Cardoso (1922-1926) emphasizing its educational reform project of 1924. To this end, we seek to understand the representations and appropriations of present education and modernity in Graccho management and its effects on public education, with specific attention to the appropriation process of São Paulo educational precepts lived by the Director of Instruction Sergipe. To this end, we conducted bibliographic and documentary research. The Graccho Cardoso administration, despite criticism of many of his initiatives, established the golden period of innovations in education in the First Republic in Sergipe.
