The children of slavery and the first sacrament: baptism, cronyism and slave society in the parish of Santo Antônio do Recife, Capitania of Pernambuco, at the end of the eighteenth century

ABSTRACT

The research on slavery in Pernambuco aims at understanding the functioning of sponsorship and the social logics followed by a specific group of men and women, the slaves. For this purpose, we used ecclesiastical sources from the late eighteenth century of the parish of Santo Antônio do Recife, central region with great movement at the time. Through the cataloging and analysis of the sources, it is possible to understand the dynamics existing in that region and, through them, to understand the appropriations made by the slaves. Forms of social insertion were identified, together with the differences existing within the group of slaves, who were very different despite sharing slavery condition.
