The miniatures in the sacred tridentine art of the Portuguese Empire: the cases of Josefa de Óbidos and João de Deus e Sepúlveda

ABSTRACT:

This article aims to understand the existence of miniatures in the 18th century sacred painting in the Portuguese Empire through the analyses of two paintings produced in two different spaces: “The virgin and Saint Joseph give to Saint Teresa a necklace” by the Portuguese painter Josefa de Óbidos for the Church of the Order of Discalced Carmelites in Cascais, Portugal, and “Jesus consoles Saint Teresa remembering the founders” by the Brazilian painter João de Deus e Sepúlveda whose work is still located at the Church of the Third Order of Mount Carmel in Recife, Brasil. Using theoreticals’ paradigms as the conception of persuasive art, ingenuity, decor and wonder, this article intends to analyze the miniatures of those panels in the context of production of sacred images by the tridentin’s church based on the painting treaties written by Alberti, Paleotti and Borromeu.
