Open-access Floristic composition and structure of an area of plain forest on Cardoso Island, Cananéia, São Paulo State, Brazil

ABSTRACT

The work was accomplished in area of the Atlantic Forest in the Cardoso Island, Cananéia County, São Paulo State, Brazil). The purpose was to study the vegetation of an area of lowland forest. The floristic e phytosociological survey of the lowland forest were accomplished in a plot of 8,000 m2 divided in 32 sub-plots the 250 m2, where all living and dead arboreal individuals with stem perimeters at a height of 1.30 m from the ground, equal to or greater than 8 cm, were sampled. In the forest, 2,147 living individuals were sampled, belonging to 108 species distributed in 79 genera and 39 families. Myrtaceae present the greatest specific richness (18 spp.) followed by Fabaceae (14), Euphorbiaceae (eight), Rubiaceae and Lauraceae (five). The five species with larger Index of Import Value were: Psychotria nuda, Eugenia expansa, Euterpe edulis, Casearia decandra, and Hyeronimia alchornioides. The Shannon’s Specific Diversity Index obtained was 3.112 and of the Equability was 0.663..
