Men and AIDS prevention: analysis on knowledge production within the field of healthcare

The involvement of men in AIDS prevention has been one of the major worldwide challenges. In seeking support for facing this challenge, this study analyzed healthcare knowledge production regarding AIDS prevention, focusing on men. The method was based on a critical review of scientific articles published between 1997 and 2009 that were accessed in the Virtual Health Library. The analytical corpus consisted of 25 articles and was worked on from a qualitative perspective, prioritizing the interpretation of meanings from the central ideas present in the set of literature analyzed. Three themes were highlighted as results from the analysis: representations of AIDS; potentials and limits of primary prevention information; and condoms as central players within prevention. It was concluded that scientific production on this subject imposes a major challenge regarding prevention: i.e. the challenge of transforming social and cultural characteristics that boost vulnerability to HIV transmission.
