Competencies for health promotion in multiprofessional residency programs: Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation and Research Domains

For health promotion actions to drive change, health professionals need to develop relevant competencies. This study assessed the limitations and potential for incorporating the domains Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation and Research of the Developing Competencies and Professional Standards for Health Promotion Capacity Building in Europe (CompHP) into the reality of a multiprofessional residency program in family and community health. We conducted a qualitative study with residents, tutors, and preceptors using the depth-hermeneutical approach and discourse analysis. The development of competencies in the diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation and research domains was key to resident training. The competencies showed potential for implementation and improvement in the quality of health promotion actions in primary care. However, gaps in the training process meant that the residency program did not provide greater clarity for the acquisition of these competencies.
