  • Psycholinguistics: Implications for the Classroom Introduction

    Mota, Mailce Borges; Buchweitz, Augusto
  • Mother-tongue Education, Linguistic Variation and Language Processing Articles

Marcilese, Mercedes; Name, Cristina; Augusto, Marina; Molina, Daniele; Armando, Raiane

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract This paper explores an intersection between three main topics: (i) sociolinguistic variation, (ii) variation acquisition and processing according to a psycholinguistic approach and (iii) mother-tongue teaching/learning when the two previous factors are taken into account. Nonstandard linguistic varieties coexist in society with a standardized variety that could be defined as the ‘language of education’. The distance between standard forms and the variety acquired by children at home is quite variable and could have an impact on how and when the formal register becomes (or not) part of the range of linguistic speaker’s options. In order to address these issues, we provide experimental results regarding the comprehension and production of two linguistic aspects that show a high variation in Brazilian Portuguese- verbal agreement and anaphoric forms in direct object position - as a function of formal education exposure; we also articulate these results with the concepts of core grammar and marked periphery (Kato, 2005) for a more theoretical discussion.

Abstract: In an interface between psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics, considering stylistic monitoring (speech ( oral activities ( reading aloud) and the necessary conditions for early literacy, this paper presents the reading profiles of 3rd grade students from elementary school and relates them to performance on a reading comprehension test and to the occurrence of variable features of speech in reading aloud. The results show that the reading aloud which presents variable features of speech cannot be considered “inaccurate”; instead, these features occurred only in proficient and word-to-word types of reading, and only by students who reached higher levels on the test.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to show that learning to speak and write is based on cognitive foundations, apart from the social and neurological aspects which should not be underestimated. The paper should thus be read from the perspective of genetic psycholinguistics, which places special emphasis on the cognitive development that underpins oral and written language. I intend to highlight the conditions that are required for successful entry into writing, ranging from mastery of the notions of number and class and their relationships of equivalence and inclusion, to the ability for cognitive decentralisation that accompanies abstraction, which is indispensable to the symbolisation that is at the origin of the phonographic code. This paper consists of two parts: the first is focused on theoretical notions without which it would be difficult to understand the perspective adopted, and the second is more practical, documented by a battery of tests that aim to evaluate the child upon entry into school, considering the aspects listed.
  • The effects of cognitive training on executive functions and reading in typically developing children with varied socioeconomic status in Brazil Articles

Weissheimer, Janaina; Fujii, Renata Callipo; Souza, Juliana Geizy Marques de

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Recent findings show that children from low-socioeconomic status (SES) tend to have reduced performance on several tasks involving working memory, attention and executive control. In addition, researchers argue for the effectiveness of training of these same cognitive skills as a way to ameliorate children’s EF skills as well as scholastic outcomes. To investigate possible training effects and to study the impact of SES on scholastic achievement in Brazilian children, we trained 61 children for 5-7 weeks and compared their performance with that of 60 age-matched peers on measures of executive functions and reading. Our results demonstrate a general effect of SES for the dependent variables. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate a positive near transfer effect on a working memory and a selective attention test and a far transfer effect on the words and pseudowords reading measure.
  • Variation under a Psycholinguistic Perspective: Number Agreement in Brazilian Portuguese and the Impact of Schooling Articles

Jakubów, Ana Paula S. P.; Corrêa, Letícia M. Sicuro

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract This paper1 discusses the impact of schooling in the production of number agreement in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) by 6th graders in Rio de Janeiro. Number agreement in BP can vary between: (a) redundant, the standard variety, or (b) non-redundant, non-standard forms. Such variation is influenced by speakers’ socioeconomic status (SES) and educational level. Results of an elicited production experiment carried out with 6th graders suggest influence of SES/ type of school and academic performance in language production; the effects of schooling and metalinguistic awareness are discussed. An account of language production is presented, which combines L1 and L2 models of speech production, considering the possibility of the coexistence of varieties in a single speaker to be akin to bilingualism.

Abstract: This paper presents a comparative study between Elementary School and Undergraduate Education investigating the use of connectives já que and porque in sentences with inferential causal relations established through inductive and deductive logical reasoning. As the acquisition of some connectives is related to schooling and consequent exposure to the written modality, this work can contribute to raising questions about the relationship between the acquisition of this modality and its influence on the way we interpret logical-inferential relations. In this paper, we present a forced-choice judgment test in which participants should choose between the connectives já que and porque when they are exposed to sentences with direct and indirect causal relationships. Our hypothesis was that, in indirect cause relationships, individuals with more experience in reading would choose já que, but individuals with little experience should choose mainly porque in both cases.

    Baretta, Danielle; Pereira, Vera Wannmacher

Abstract: Based on psycholinguistic studies, this article deals with reading comprehension skills focusing prediction and the textual consciousness level imbricated in this strategy. To demonstrate this theory, a research has been carried on with 55 sixth grade-students whose ages ranged from 11 to 13, all attending the elementary educational level of a public school in the city of Porto Alegre. In order to examine the effective use of predictions, a reading task with parts of a fable was presented in paper cards, as well as questions about the story to stimulate the use of those strategies. The verbal protocol of self-revelation was adopted to verify the participants´ textual level of consciousness. The results showed that most of the students managed to deal with reading prediction, making pertinent anticipations, although 27% of them were unsuccessful. In relation to the textual consciousness in the use of this strategy, just over half of the students showed metalinguistic behavior, being capable to explain the generative bases of their predictions efficiently using both intratextual and extratextual information. Nevertheless, 47% of the pupils were not able to achieve the goal, since they responded the questions in a confusing and mistaken manner or used vague and imprecise information while showing evidences of how they had processed the question. Considering the educational context, the research results suggested that both the use of the reading prediction and its conscious awareness are relevant topics to be applied in Portuguese language classes, for they provide the teacher with information concerning the possibilities and difficulties on students´ reading process.

Abstract: This article aims at investigating, from the perspective of experimental linguistics, the use of iconicity as a provisional reading strategy used by children during the pre-literacy phase. In the background, we contrast the recruitment of iconicity with the notion of default arbitrariness in language, as proposed by Saussure. To test the interplay of these cognitions, we propose a role-playing experiment with children from three age groups, 4, 5 and 6, in order to verify if these participants use iconic relations to guide them in a task of pairing figure to written word. Our results show that iconicity is a first-hand resource used by some children, specially 4 year-olds, who tended to establish a clearer motivational relationship between the size of objects and the size of the word that names them. Nevertheless, iconicity persists as a strategy in a few 6 year-olds, on the brink of attending literacy class. Considering these results, we discuss the implications of choosing a literacy method, either favoring global reading or grapheme-phoneme decoding, specially for the kids who tend to preserve the iconic strategy longer.
  • O Papel da Formulação de Questões Durante a Leitura Compartilhada de Livros na Educação Infantil Articles

Pereira, Aline E.; Gabriel, Rosângela; Justice, Laura M.

Abstract: The shared reading of books is one of the activities that most contributes to the development of young children's language (JUSTICE; SOFKA, 2010; SÉNÉCHAL, 2015; EVANS; SAINT-AUBIN, 2005; SÉNÉCHAL; LEFEVRE, 2002) and has effects in the acquisition of the written language registers (BUS et al., 1995). However, the effects of this contribution depend on how the adult interacts with and encourages the child's participation in the discussion and reflection beyond the text. Young children who actively participate in adult-led shared reading of books, which interact with them through questions, word-labeling, and referents, have greater gains in vocabulary than children who passively hear the book reading (SÉNÉCHAL et al., 1995). In addition, the use of questions plays a key role in directing attention and maintaining the child's participation in the activity of shared reading. The purpose of this study is to (1) determine how often preschool teachers ask questions during shared reading of books with their students, and (2) identify the types of questions that teachers asked related to basic vs. complex questions. A total of nine teachers and their students aged 3 to 5 years, from a city in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, participated in the study. Two shared reading sessions of each teacher (n = 18) were recorded on video, transcribed and coded using an adapted version of the Systematic Assessment of Book Reading-Transcript Coding Version 2.1 (ZUCKER et al., 2017). The results show that during the eighteen shared reading sessions, teachers compiled a total of 329 questions, classified into two categories: basic questions and complex questions. From the total, the basic ones had a higher frequency (n = 285) and complex questions were formulated less frequently (n = 44). The results of this research are in line with other studies (PENTIMONTI et al., 2018; BECK; MCKEOWN, 2001; GIROLAMETTO et al., 2000) that show that teachers usually ask basic questions more frequently when compared to complex questions. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of calling teachers attention to the value of shared reading, mediated by an interaction that favors the formulation of questions, seeking to expand the proportion of complex questions, given the influence that this type of activity has on the cognitive and linguistic development of children.
  • Um Estudo Sobre o Acento Gráfico na Aquisição da Escrita: Ortografia e Fonologia Articles

Ney, Luanda Alvariza Gomes; Miranda, Ana Ruth Moresco

Abstract: This paper discusses the criteria used by third and fifth graders who attend a public school, in Pelotas, RS, Brazil, regarding the function of diacritical marks in the writing system. Considering the close relationship between prosodic stress and the rules of use of diacritical marks, the study reported in this paper aimed at investigating children's hypotheses concerning these orthographic devices. Data were collected by a controlled writing instrument, which was especially designed for this research, and by clinical interviews guided by the Piagetian method (CARRAHER, 1989). After completing a writing task, children were induced to explain the reasons that led them to use diacritics in their spelling. The analysis of data on their written production showed that children got the diacritical mark right, mainly in contexts in which alternation of vowel timbre could occur, that is, in medium and low medium vowels. Results of the interviews highlighted the emergence of criteria based on acoustic and graphic aspects. The analysis allowed us to define a hierarchy of acoustic criteria, i. e., vocalic timbre, vowel duration and prominence.
  • Developmental dyslexia: a condensed review of literature Articles

Kuerten, Anna Belavina; Mota, Mailce Borges; Segaert, Katrien

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract: In this article we provide a condensed review of literature on developmental dyslexia. Starting with the historical background to this language-based reading disorder, we discuss four key components that are crucial for a valid and operational definition of developmental dyslexia. We then present the major theoretical explanations of developmental dyslexia in order to gain a better understanding of the causes of this reading disorder. These causal explanations are addressed in the context of Morton and Frith’s (1995) model. Four major theories of developmental dyslexia are discussed: the phonological deficit theory, the double-deficit theory, the magnocellular theory, and the cerebellar theory. The last section of this review addresses the model of reading development proposed by Frith (1986). Understanding the developmental progression of children’s abilities in reading is crucial in order to detect in which phase of this progression a breakdown attributed to dyslexia occurs.
  • Políticas Públicas de Alfabetização Articles

    Scliar-Cabral, Leonor

Abstract: In the 2016 National Early Literacy Assessment (ANA) (INEP, 2017), 2,160,601 students from Brazilian public schools were evaluated at the end of the 3rd year of the Early Literacy Cycle, in reading and writing, among whom only 12.99% reached the aimed level (4) in reading and only 8.28% reached the aimed level (5) in writing. However, in the town of Lagarto (Sergipe State), which, according to the aforementioned evaluation, had ranked last in Brazil, with only 3.02% of students at the aimed level in reading, and penultimate place in writing, with only 1.84%, things became quite different. Being taught by the Scliar Early Literacy System, seventy children were reading with fluency and comprehension and, above all, with pleasure, by the end of their first year, in 2017. I analyze two documents on early literacy public policies: The final version of the Common National Curricular Base (BRAZIL, MEC 2017) and the decree 9.765 of April 11, 2019, which establishes the National Literacy Policy, and I explain why the lack of knowledge about advances in sciences such as linguistics, psycholinguistics, neuropsychology and neuroscience leads to failure in early literacy.

Abstract In this article we discuss the interrelationships between contextual and individual variables in the acquisition and use of L2, based on researches developed by our team. We assume that in the late acquisition of L2 there is variability in the proficiency of the learners, and that it is necessary to (re)know the effects of the individual variables in the teaching-learning processes. The experiments, which were created according to the Psycholinguistics of bilingualism and carried out in formal contexts of acquisition, evaluated associations between attention and working memory systems and the performance of bilinguals in their L2. The results, although incipient, indicate that effects of pedagogical approaches can be affected by individual differences. In addition, they reveal the need of more experiments that focus these variables on L2 teaching-learning processes.
  • The Impact of Language Attrition on Language Teaching: The Dynamics of Linguistic Knowledge Retention and Maintenance in Multilingualism Articles

    Kupske, Felipe Flores

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract: Language attrition has become a vibrant theme as it has implications for theoretical linguistics, including, for example, the organization of linguistic information in the brain and language processing. Insights from this area also have an impact on the study of second language (L2) development and can feed the area of language teaching. Once language attrition may be valuable for the study of language retention and maintenance, it can contribute to language teaching with long lasting results, more effective planning and syllabus design. In this perspective, as studies exploring L2 attrition are still limited, this article1 provides a synthesis of research on the area. By drawing from the Dynamic Model of Multilingualism and from the Threshold Hypothesis, it also explores the implications L2 attrition research has for language teaching with a view to establishing more informed language practices and policies.
  • The Negative Evidence Hypothesis: The Acquisition of the Double-Object Construction by Brazilian-Portuguese English Bilinguals Articles

Oliveira, Cândido Samuel Fonseca de; Penzin, Alberto Gallo Araújo

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract: This study aims to add to the body of evidence regarding the linguistic structures that seem to be more challenging in L2 acquisition than in L1 acquisition (DeKeyser, 2005; Ellis, 2008; Inagaki, 2001; Slabakova, 2014; Sorace, 2011). The Negative Evidence Hypothesis (NEH) (Oliveira, 2016) predicts that bilinguals are less sensitive than native speakers to violations resulted from the overgeneralization of an L2-specific rule. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing the behavior of Brazilian Portuguese-English bilinguals with different profiles towards the double-object construction in English with unlicensed verbs in two acceptability judgment tasks. The results corroborate the NEH by conveying that bilinguals gain sensitivity as they become more proficient, yet, the data suggest that not even when immersed in the L2, they become as sensitive as native speakers.
  • When Knowing a Grammar Rule Makes L2 Users Non-Native-like Articles

Santos, Clarice Fernandes dos; Souza, Ricardo Augusto de; Ciríaco, Larissa Santos

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract: In this work, we investigate the effects of transfer of training in late Brazilian Portuguese-English bilinguals, compared to natives, in relation to their processing of the English causative-have construction. Two experiments were conducted: one focused on the comprehension of the pattern, and the other focused on its production. The results of both experiments point to the fact that the grammatical rule learned by bilinguals is only 'transferred' when there is time to implement it. In the first experiment, we found no effect of training, on the contrary, bilinguals might have been affected by the SVO distribution of the corresponding construction in their L1. In the second experiment, however, we found that bilinguals had high rates of usage of the canonical causative-have form, SAuxOV. This behavior indicates that bilinguals do not implement the rule automatically. Rather, its implementation is seen in more controlled tasks. Thus, explicitly given grammatical rules seem not to be implicitly learned, as they are not automatized to be easily retrieved in real life usage. Moreover, concerning the causative-have rule, bilinguals' linguistic behavior was more similar to that of natives' when they did not implement the rule and used the SVO form with a causative sense.

Abstract In this article, we investigate the effects of perceptual training on the perception and production of word-initial VOT patterns in English by Brazilian learners. The experiment consisted of a pre-test, a post-test and two delayed post-tests. The first delayed post-test took place one month after training, while the second one took place three years later. The results show a slight increase in the identification rates by the Experimental Group, and no significant increase between the pre-test and the final post-test in the production data. Based on these results, we draw attention to the need of associating perceptual training with additional awareness-raising tasks on phonetic-phonological aspects, combined with a continuous exposure to the target forms.

Abstract Bearing in mind the challenges involved in speech production (LEVELT, 1989), especially in the L2 (KORMOS, 2014), this study examines strategic planning (ELLIS, 2005) and its impact on the performance of learners of English as an L2 in an oral task carried out after they had planned it individually or collaboratively. Drawing from the output hypothesis (SWAIN, 1985), this piece of research analysed quantitative and qualitative data from the narratives produced by 17 high school students. The quantitative analysis showed a statistically significant advantage for the outcome variable when the participants planned collaboratively. At the same time, while the results for fluency and accuracy were not statistically significant, they also favoured the same planning condition. The qualitative data indicated wide acceptance of oral tasks with the use of WhatsApp. It is suggested that the adoption of tasks that include strategic planning as a means to lessen the attentional burden involved in L2 speech production (FORTKAMP, 2000) may be an attractive pedagogical resource to help English students to learn the language in a contextualized way.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice and manipulate language sounds in their base form (phonemes). It is associated with emerging literacy skills and predictive of skilled reading. The aim of the present study was to investigate phonemic awareness in German and its association with speaking a German-origin, but predominantly unwritten language. We investigated speakers of Hunsrückisch, a Brazilian minority language predominantly used in its spoken form. Participants were literate Brazilian Portuguese speakers who spoke Hunsrückisch and German or Hunsrückisch only. The results show faster, more accurate performance in the phonemic awareness task among participants who spoke Hunsrückisch and German, relative to those who spoke Hunsrückisch only. Participants who spoke Hunsrückisch only were able to perform the phonemic awareness tasks, but having learned to read and write in German allowed for faster, more accurate performance, especially in relation to pseudowords.
