Labor and gender relations in tobacco production in a municipality of Santa Catarina

Abstract

This article is the result of a dissertation, elaborated between the years 2019 and 2021, which had as a general objective to analyze the work and gender relations among farmers/family tobacco producers in a municipality of Santa Catarina. This is a qualitative, documental and field research, with the participation of 20 tobacco producers. With the research, it was found that tobacco production is representative in family farming in the municipality studied. About work and gender relations, the study showed that women carry out non-mechanized activities of the production cycle, accumulate domestic and care work; the men carry out mechanized activities (with tractor and agricultural implements), related to the management, courses and commercialization of the production. The studied process demonstrates the importance of promoting and maintaining public policies aimed at the rural environment, which can break with situations of gender inequality and the sexual division of labor.
