Open-access Analysis of formal employment in tourism of Mato Grosso do Sul

Abstract

The 46-year state of Mato Grosso do Sul currently has 79 municipalities, including Bonito and Corumbá, which are highlighted in tourism. This article aims to analyze which of these regions has leveraged formal employment in the tourism sector as well as identifying the prominent subsectors. This analysis in particular is carried out based on the Locational Quotient (QL), which is a measure of location and specialization, and the data was extracted from the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS) of the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) and brings the portrait of the base year 2021. The results pointed to Bonito with greater prominence, with a QL above 6, taking the state in question as a reference. The Pantanal, which occupies 44% of the territory of Corumbá, obtained an approximate QL of 1.3. The relevance of this research highlights the regional specialization focused on tourism and allows demonstrating the potential of these regions for improving strategic policies aimed at the tourism sector as a vector for regional development.
