Open-access Ethnobotany of medicinal plants in the Quilombola community of Caldeirão, Salvaterra, Ilha de Marajó, Pará

Abstract

This study investigated the use of medicinal plants by the quilombola community of Caldeirão, in Salvaterra, Pará, highlighting the cultural and medicinal importance of plant resources in the region. With an approach and quantitative-qualitative data, the study involved interviews with 40 representatives of local families, using the “snowball” and “intentional” sampling methods. The collection of botanical materials and photographic records during guided tours made it possible to catalog samples in the MFS Herbarium at the State University of Pará. The results indicate that older residents have a broader herbal knowledge compared to younger people. In total, 31 botanical families were identified, with jucá [Libidibia ferrea (Mart. ex Tul.) L.P.Queiroz] and andiroba [Carapa guianensis (Aubl.)], being outstanding species due to their versatility of uses. The use of medicinal plants was more commonly associated by the community with mental and behavioral disorders. Although the community is close to urban centers, it still preserves traditional healing practices.
