Abstract

This article’s theme is the school cultural heritage of municipal public schools in Portão, Rio Grande do Sul, its legacy and reflections on public schools in contemporary times. The objective is to identify the forms, both material and immaterial, of this heritage, narrated and presented by seven retired teachers from this education network through ethnography and bibliographic research. These women present questions that involve learning from the legacy of public schools and whether there is a need to reinvent the school. With these studies, it is possible to affirm that the professional career of teachers in the early years of elementary school in public education in Portão was impacted by the school structure, pedagogical experiences and government technologies. Therefore, their reminiscences are part of the school cultural heritage of this place.
