The authors proposed a program for scorpion control in the town of Aparecida, SP, an endemic region of Tityus serrulatus. They studied the scorpion clusters in urban and rural areas, the environmental degradation of the town’s outskirts, and the new scorpion procreation and dispersal. They also evaluated infrastructure problems, such as the collection and disposal of garbage, sanitation (sewage and storm drain systems), the condition of vacant lots and construction sites in urban areas. An epidemiological study was made, and then the authors suggested that some educational measures be implemented, such as the distribution of pamphlets, the organization of voluntary public cleaning groups, visits to residences, and the participation of teachers and students in the public and private school systems. Chemical control was suggested for high-risk areas, especially those near schools. The use of natural predators was also proposed within the current sanitation regulations for urban areas. The authors concluded that all these procedures must be integrated and continue uninterrupted for several years. They also proposed working together with the health officers responsible for dengue erradication and the institution of a "week for the study of scorpionism" to educate the population in the prevention of envenomation and the control of scorpion procreation and dispersal in Aparecida.
