Venomous and poisonous animals

BOOK REVIEW

VENOMOUS AND POISONOUS ANIMALS, written by Professor Dr. Dietrich Mebs and published by medpharm Scientific Publisher 2002, is a real handbook for biologists, toxicologists, toxinologists, physicians, pharmacists, and other professionals.

There are 261 color photographs, 71 black and white figures, and 37 graphic formulas. It contains the most up-to-date information on venomous and poisonous animals; ecological aspects; their toxins and the way they act; what happens when humans are envenomed; and the appropriate first aid and treatment.

After a well-written introduction to Toxinology with good definitions for venoms, poisons, and toxins, the author divides the book into two major sections: Marine Animals and Terrestrial Animals.

The first section includes sponges, cnidarians, echinoderms, fishes, and sea snakes. The section on Terrestrial Animals includes Invertebrates – scorpions, spiders, centipedes, and insects – and Vertebrates – amphibians, lizards, birds, and mammals. Snakes are identified by continents.

For each group of animals, the reader will find valuable information on habitat, geographical distribution, animal description, envenoming and venom characteristics, envenoming epidemiology, and case reports.

VENOMOUS AND POISONOUS ANIMALS with 340 pages is certainly a major contribution to the fascinating world of toxins, and venomous and poisonous animals.
