Neste artigo, pretendemos expor uma interpretação da teoria tomásica do juízo assertórico (enunciado), analisando os aspectos semânticos, epistêmicos e ontológicos dessa teoria. São explicitados os elementos constitutivos do juízo: conceito, imagem, predicação (composição e divisão), reflexão, afirmação, negação, verdadeiro e falso. O artigo mostra que, interpretada dessa forma, a teoria do juízo pode contribuir para o esclarecimento das distinções que serão tematizadas pela metafísica tomásica: as distinções entre ser, ente, essência e existência.

In this paper, we intend to present an interpretation of Thomas Aquinas's theory of judgment (statement), examining semantical, epistemological and ontological aspects of this theory. Elements of judgment such as concepts, phantasms, predication (combination and division), reflection, affirmation, truth and falsity are explained. The article shows that this interpretation of Aquinas's theory of judgment may contribute to clarify fundamental distinctions (as the distinctions between being, essence and existence) of Aquinas's metaphysics.

Para Maquiavel, o que confere valor a uma religião não é a importância de seu fundador, o conteúdo dos ensinamentos, a verdade dos dogmas ou a significação dos mistérios e ritos. Importa não a essência da religião e sim sua função e importância para a vida coletiva. A religião ensina a reconhecer e a respeitar as regras políticas a partir do mandamento religioso. Essa norma coletiva pode assumir tanto o aspecto coercivo exterior da disciplina militar ou da autoridade política quanto o caráter persuasivo interior da educação moral e cívica para a produção do consenso coletivo.

For Machiavelli, religion is valued not by the importance of its founder, the content of its teachings, the truth of its dogmas or the significance of its rites. It is not the essence of what really matters but its function and importance for collective life. Religion teaches to recognize and respect political rules through the religious commandments. This collective norm could assume the outer coercive aspect of the military discipline as well as the inner persuasive character of civic and moral education for the production of collective consensus.

Este texto se ocupa de um exame, em caráter introdutório, das relações entre a reflexão de Bacon acerca das limitações de nossas faculdades e o ceticismo filosófico - um tema pouco considerado pela literatura mais recente, a despeito das muitas referências a tal filosofia. Ainda que, à primeira vista, tais referências possam parecer vagas e imprecisas, pensamos que um exame adequado de algumas delas pode revelar, não apenas a importância do tema para a compreensão de aspectos do seu próprio empreendimento, mas o interesse de Bacon pela literatura cética contemporânea. As peculiaridades de sua própria interpretação, por sua vez, parecem antecipar traços do modo como essa filosofia foi compreendida por filósofos posteriores, como Hume.

This text focuses, in a preliminary way, on the relations between Francis Bacon's reflections on the limits of our cognitive faculties and philosophical skepticism, a theme not much considered by most of recent commentaries, in spite of Bacon's own explicit and numerous allusions to this philosophy. Even if these allusions seem at first sight somewhat loose and not very sharp, some of them reveal, we think, not only its relevance for understanding of some aspects of his own enterprise, but also Bacon's attention to the skeptical literature produced on the period. Moreover, the particularities of his own interpretation of skepticism seem to anticipate important features of the way this philosophy was understood by later philosophers as Hume.

Com o agravamento dos conflitos religiosos no reino francês, principalmente a partir da segunda metade do século XVI, a questão do direito de resistência ao poder político voltou a ocupar um lugar de destaque no debate público. De um lado, autores que defendiam o direito dos súditos de resistir às ordens do monarca quando seus comandos fossem tirânicos, justificando, inclusive, o tiranicídio; de outro, autores que negavam esse direito e afirmavam o dever irrestrito de obediência à autoridade política legitimamente constituída. O objetivo deste texto é apresentar essa discussão e enfatizar alguns de seus aspectos que antecipam o debate moderno sobre o direito de resistência à autoridade política.

In the half of the sixteenth century, with the increase of the religious conflicts in the French kingdom, the question of the right of political resistance retook an important place in public debate. Some authors defend the right of subjects to resist the commands of the monarch when they were tyrannical, justifying even the tyrannicide; others denied this right and affirmed the unrestricted duty of obedience to the political authority. The aim of this paper is to present this quarrel and to emphasize some of its aspects that anticipate the modern debate on the political resistance.

This paper discusses two varieties of interpretations of Hume's moral theory. On the one side the attempt to represent Hume's moral theory as a form of the moral subjetivism, on the other, as a form of realism. Finally, propose that Hume's moral philosophy may be rather described as a form of the intersubjetivism.

Um dos problemas mais difíceis enfrentados pelos defensores de uma ética evolucionista é a falácia naturalista. Neste artigo, analisamos as soluções propostas por W. Rottschaefer e por R. Richards e verificamos não serem elas suficientes para eliminar o problema da falácia naturalista sem comprometer a especificidade da moral.

One of the most difficult problems for who defends an evolutionary ethics is the naturalist fallacy. In this article, we examine the solutions proposed by W. Rottschaefer and R. Richards. We believe that these solutions are not good enough to completely eliminate the problem of the naturalist fallacy without compromising the specificity of morality.

Aparentemente, ações e omissões não compartilham as mesmas propriedades. Um caso que ilustraria essa assimetria é a causalidade: enquanto as ações são explicadas como a realização efetiva de uma relação causal entre um agente e certos fatos, as omissões parecem dever ser explicadas como a ausência de relações causais entre uma pessoa e os fatos. Neste artigo, mostrarei que ações e omissões são, contrariamente às aparências, simétricas no que diz respeito à atribuição de causalidade genuína.

At first sight, actions and omissions do not share the same properties. Some authors hold that an illustration of this assimetry is causality: actions must be explained as the instantiation of a causal relation between an agent and certain facts, while omissions seem to have to be explained as the absence of causal relations between a person and the relevant facts. In this paper, I will show that actions and omissions are, contrary to appearances, simetrical regarding the attribution of genuine causality.
