STATELESSNESS: THE DIFFICULT EXISTENCE OF THE NON-EXISTENT

Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyze the life narrative of two stateless sisters who came from Lebanon to Brazil, in order to understand the difficulties they reported both in the country of departure and in the country of arrival, as well as to verify whether or not they received support from the Brazilian State in their reception and integration. The narrative, which is part of the book Entre-lugares. Trajetórias de migrantes, refugiados e apátridas (Dornelas; Nunes, 2019), is examined in the light of French Discourse Analysis (FDA), based on the following planes of Maingueneau’s (2005) global semantics: themes, vocabulary, enunciative deixis and mode of enunciation (ethos). The results highlight the sisters’ journey in pursuit of Brazilian nationality, as well as the solidarity of civil society (volunteers, church) in welcoming the displaced individuals.
