Open-access BETWEEN PAIN AND CARE: SCHOOL, CHILDREN AND READING IN INFÂNCIA, BY GRACILIANO RAMOS

Abstract

This article explores the development of readers within the school context, as represented in Graciliano Ramos’s book Infância. The study examines the protagonist’s relationship with school and reading to highlight key issues in the Brazilian educational context, including the role of schools, the experience of childhood, and the challenge of fostering reading habits in Brazil. The findings reveal that the protagonist’s development as a reader unfolds within a school setting characterized by violence and exclusion. Additionally, the narrative depicts childhood as a time when violence is naturalized. Finally, the book portrays the formation of the reader as marked by a constant distance between the child and reading, especially within institutional settings.
