Open-access MEANINGS OF POLICE VIOLENCE IN A SCHOOL POSTER: FAILED ACT, POLEMICAL DISCOURSE, AND INTERPRETIVE CONDITIONING

Abstract

This article examines polemical discourse through the lens of French Discourse Analysis based on the repercussions of a poster created by high school students from a public school in Sorocaba, Brazil. We analyze the controversy through materials that outline two antagonistic subject positions. The critical position is evident in the poster, in a note of support issued by the OAB, APEOESP, and APROFFESP of Sorocaba, and in journalistic reports. The policing-oriented position is manifested in a Facebook page supportive of the Military Police (Sgt. Alexandre) and a note of repudiation and clarification issued by the corporation. The study reveals that, despite the apparent antagonism, the poster-at the center of the controversy-shows, in the form of a Freudian slip, signs of convergence with values of the policing-oriented position.
