An examination of Anthony Giddens'and Alain Touraine's contributions to the analysis of contemporary societies leads to a presentation of the ideas of Zigmunt Bauman, for whom anxiety is constitutive, and therefore inseparable, of the responsibility for choices regarding the world in which one lives.
