Population growth and sustainable development

The interrelatioship between population, environment and development is discussed with special emphasis on the concept of "carrying capacity". The use of this concept as merely concerning population pressures on natural resources is rejected. The author claims that to be useful for demographic studies talcing into account environmental perspectives the concept should be applied to research units with a lower level of aggregation.
