RAYMOND WILLIAMS, WELSH WRITER

Abstract

Seeking to examine how writer Raymond Williams addressed his Welsh roots, this paper explores some of the key moments of his path as a critic, novelist, socialist intellectual and political activist. It highlights how the dilemmas posed by Williams’ origins appeared in his critical and creative texts, treated differently according to the time and field of intervention - if in his political or intellectual activity. By the end, the article will have demonstrated not only how Williams questioned his origins and the uniqueness of Welsh culture and politics, but also how facing these issues affected his work by shaping the writer’s theoretical framework and critical approach.
