ANTONIO CANDIDO’S POLITICAL RADICAL SHIFT IN THE 1970s

Abstract

This essay contextualizes and examines a supposed more politically radical shift in Antonio Candido’s intellectual trajectory in the transition from the 1960s to the 1970s. It seeks to explain the origins and understand the meaning of this radicalization that manifested itself in the critic’s intellectual production of the period, such as the essays “Dialética da malandragem” (1970), “Literatura e subdesenvolvimento” (1970) and “De cortiço a cortiço” (1973). In this regard, the article briefly reconstructs Antonio Candido’s global trajectory, discussing the main conditioning factors of his ideas in the period and suggesting an interpretation of their ‘radical’ meaning, as they appear in the aforementioned essays.
