Abstract
Based on the information that "O casamento do Diabo" (The Devil’s Wedding), translated by Machado de Assis, was "imitated from the German", which is contested by Jean-Michel Massa and Gondin da Fonseca, who argue that Machado misled and deceived the public since he did not know German at the time, we searched for and found a German version of the song "Satan Marié" by Gustave Nadaud which may have been used by Machado, likely aided by Henrique Fleiuss, to write "O casamento do Diabo." Thus, we will compare the three texts to demonstrate that Machado was, after all, honest when presenting the text as "imitated from the German".
