Abstract
This article offers a reading of a barely known poem by Machado de Assis, "The Cry of Ipiranga," published in the newspaper Correio Mercantil, in September 1856. Additionally, it addresses two chronicles that use the same historical topos of the poem, taken from History of Rome, by Titus Livius.
