Abstract
The aim of this article is to examine the electoral process in the Empire and mainly in the First Republic, through the chronicles written by Machado de Assis entitled "A Semana." It tries to establish a confrontation, especially with regard to electoral fraud, between the chronicler's observations and the analyses of political scientists.
