The paper discusses the deviation, conducted by Machado de Assis in Iaiá Garcia, from the expectations of the sentimental narrative and the comparison established between the two love triangles: Jorge, Estela and Luís Garcia, on the one side, and Estela, Jorge and Iaiá Garcia, on the other. Considering the action of the passions and the slave system in the conduct of characters, it analyzes the confrontation between the conventions of love passion and the institution of marriage as a tool for social mobility.
