Abstract
The essay examines the problem of the aesthetic distance in “A Semana”, a series of chronicles by Machado de Assis. In this particular series, the author mixes different uses of the first person, which makes its interpretation especially challenging. The analysis of some variations of the enunciating instance in this set of texts reveals the autonomy of the chronicles among themselves and, as a consequence, the impossibility of choosing an a priori critical method for their approach.
