State recognition and ethnic identification: the case of the "Coordinación de Pueblos Originarios de Almirante Brown" in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires

Abstract

This article discusses processes of recognition and state participation of the new generations of indigenous leaders in the local governments of the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires. In the case here addressed, the experience of the "Coordinación de Pueblos Originarios de Almirante Brown" (2015 - 2018) will be investigated in order to exemplify a diversity of negotiation formats between indigenous peoples and the State, as well as the legal and administrative management that takes place in the indigenous population’s demands for better living conditions, territory and identity in urban contexts.
