How do we explain the survival of a non-institutionalized form of credit in modern France’s fully developed economy? Consulting the files of a small textile and clothing shop catering for workers from the Northern French mining basin - from the 1930s to the present day - allows us to compile a sociological profile of its clientele and, at the same time, investigate the forms of direct credit provided by the store owner to his customers. This over-the-counter credit between the Jewish trader and the Polish Catholic workers evades public control. Condemned as both usurious and economically irrational by public authorities since Liberation, this type of consumer credit nonetheless prospered as late as the 1970s by exploiting the loopholes in contemporary juridical and financial regulations - a practice founded on long-term mutual trust and on the control exerted by groups and interpersonal relations (family, neighbours, friends…), blended with the multiple interactions between people from similar migratory backgrounds. Sharing the same language and familiar with the patterns of consumption of Catholics - the ostentatious purchases of working class Poles - ensured the dependence of these clients on store owners who, for their part, provided access to luxury goods.
  • As etnogêneses: velhos atores e novos papéis no cenário cultural e político Artigos

The different uses of the concept of ethnogenesis refer to the same type of social dynamic, based on the historicity of cultural structures and forms that are more usually taken to be relatively static. The idea of ethnogenesis - or better, ethnogeneses - refers to the dynamism inherent to ethnic groups, whose social logics reveal a plasticity and adaptive capacity not always recognized by anthropological analysis. In fact, ethnogenesis was and is a continual historical process that reflects the cultural and political dynamic of societies anterior or exterior to the development of today's national States. Ethnogenesis is a constitutive part of the historical process of humanity itself and not just a fact of the present, as can be deduced, perhaps, from the surprise shown by some social researchers when faced with its contemporary effervescence.

This text discusses the presence and meaning of mythic processes related to the folguedo do boi (‘the revelry of the ox’), adopting a structuralist-inspired approach. The first part deconstructs the widespread idea that the folguedo do boi corresponds, or orginally corresponded, to the performance of a folk play or auto. I argue that this belief is a clear example of the illusion of archaism typically fostered by folklore studies. Reformulating the ‘problem of the auto,’ I propose comprehending it as a set of origin narratives which emerge in the literature in the middle of the 20th century. The text works to demonstrate the mythic nature of these narratives. The conclusions reached by this analysis enable a fresh perspective on the relation between myth and rite in the folguedo do boi.

This article is a study of various examples of the shamanic verbal arts, the majority taken from South America. It takes as its starting point their parallelistic constructions - that is, the effects produced by repeating and juxtaposing images and verses. As well as providing a bibliographic survey of the topic, it also explores the relationship between the phenomenon of verbal repetition in chants and narratives, and various contemporary issues in Americanist anthropology, such as the dynamics of personification, sociocosmic agency and predation. The study also proposes a number of new directions in the study of Amerindian transformational aesthetics, based on the comparative analysis of specific traits of orality in ritual performance.
  • O teatro em Aparecida: a santa e o lobisomem Artigos

    Dawsey, John C.

This essay discusses the experience of visitors to the city of Aparecida, based on theater director Richard Schechner’s germinal text in the anthropology of performance, "Points of Contact Between Anthropological and Theatrical Thought." The methodological ‘twist’ employed here by Schechner - associated with the anthropology of Victor Turner, under whose guidance and inspiration the director developed much of his own thinking - is particularly useful in analyzing the ritual process in Aparecida, where image and pilgrimage evoke a view from the margins. However, the route followed by visitors such as those coming from the shantytown Garden of Flowers (also known as ‘Devils’ Hole’) may require another methodological move, a double dislocation of our point of observation, allowing the observer not only to look at everyday life from Aparecida, but also to look at Aparecida on the margins of the margins from the carnival fair. The article explores the ‘hypothesis’ that what liturgy and the ritual process separate in Aparecida, in order to compose an impassive image of the saint in the space of the sacred, is combined in the tension-packed images that erupt in the Garden of Flowers. Is the carnival fair a means through which popular culture allows the return of the repressed? Somatic states and forms of bodily innervation associated with experiences of shock, and which belong to the embodied history of women and men from ‘Devils’ Hole,’ erupt in the spectacle of the werewolf woman, among other figures, at the carnival fair. On the margins of the margins, shock effects produce a double estrangement - in relation to both the everyday and the extraordinary.
  • Música para matar o tempo intervalo, suspensão e imersão Artigos

    Hikiji, Rose Satiko Gitirana

This article discusses some of the relations between music and time, in particular the temporalities of groups of children and youths I have researched, and certain properties of music making time. In my research with students from a government musical education project (Guri Project/ São Paulo), the main reason given for studying music was their need to ‘kill time.’ From a common sense point of view, ‘idle’ time is dangerous time. Parents and project organizers stress the need ‘to occupy the time’ of children and youths, ‘to take them off of the streets.’ Here I analyze the negative evaluation of free time and the specificity of music making time. Musical time is compared with play time, characterized by an immersion in the activity and by the suspension of daily life. Finally, I ask how the time for music, initially an interval, overflows into the rest of the daily life, determining rhythms, filling empty spaces and building meanings.

This article provides a descriptive account of contemporary tattooing, based on a perspective that prioritizes the notion of practice, as well as the interactions and experiences involved in the process of being tattooed. The analysis attempts to rebuild a holistic view of tattooing, combining subjective processes and social dynamics as equally constitutive parts of this activity. Among the conclusions reached are: (a) the emergence of tattooing as a new aesthetic norm and a lived experience at the heart of the western society; and (b) the configuration of a new subjectivity, the ‘tattooed,’ as an interactive, innovative, emotional and reflexive process in which the body is converted into a form of expressing and constructing the subject.

After examining various dimensions and alternative solutions to the tension between anthropological relativism and the universalism of human rights, the author proposes that extension of the latter originates in the ‘ethical desire’ of an ‘ethics of dissatisfaction,’ nourished by the anthropological adoption of the other’s perspective. This approach allows us to develop the theoretical foundations for an engaged anthropology and a disciplinary movement no longer defined simply as the study of others or the reflexive mirroring of the anthropologist’s world in theirs, but a disciplinary practice renewed by an ‘accessibility’ towards others that deliberately exposes anthropology to their questioning and demands.
  • Patrimônio, negociação e conflito Artigos

    Velho, Gilberto

The article examines the issue of cultural heritage, focusing on the process of negotiating reality. It draws attention to aspects of divergence and conflict deriving from the different values and interests of the actors involved. A number of examples are cited - such as the registration of the candomblé terreiro, Casa Blanca, in Salvador, Bahia, and the paradigmatic case of Copacabana - in order to demonstrate that public heritage policies cannot be dissociated from the heterogeneity and complexity of social life.
