CONSEQUENCES OF ARMED VIOLENCE IN RIO DE JANEIRO FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES

Abstract:

This study aimed at analyzing and understanding the consequences of armed violence in Physical Education (PE) classes in a school located in an area of conflict between drug traffickers and police in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is an ethnographic study using participant observation and semi-structured interviews. It found that students’ and teachers’ bodies in open PE spaces are more exposed to the risks of victimization than in classes of other subjects in that locus. The consequences of the conflicts remain for days even after confrontations have ended, extending the time of subtle reflections.
