Open-access STEPHEN JOHN BALL AND STRICTO SENSU RESEARCH IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION: ANALYSIS OF THE MODE OF APPROPRIATION

Abstract

This article analyzes how Physical Education research in Brazil appropriates Stephen Ball's theoretical framework. Using an integrative review of theses and dissertations, we found that Ball's approach is adopted to understand the influence of educational policies on pedagogical practices and teacher training. The research identifies three types of appropriation: incidental, topical conceptual, and work mode. Most studies use critical and post-structuralist theories to examine power relations and governmentality in education. We conclude that Ball's approach provides valuable tools to analyze the interaction between policy and practice in Physical Education, highlighting the importance of considering both macro and micro aspects of educational policies. It is suggested to expand the adoption of this framework to deepen understanding of curricular policies and teaching practices.
