Gospel Samba: On Pentecostalism, Culture, Politics, and Mediating Practices in Rio de Janeiro’s Urban Peripheries

ABSTRACT

Reflecting on the intersections between religion, politics, and culture, this article proposes analytics of the relationship between Pentecostalism and the urban peripheries of Rio de Janeiro. It draws on the trajectory of one gospel samba musician. The article foregrounds the relationship between urban peripheries and gospel music to think about the formation of peripheral subjectivities, their moralities, and artistic and cultural practices.
