Occupied public schools in São Paulo (2015-2016): between public tenure and the right to freedom of expression

ABSTRACT

Between 2015 and the beginning of 2016, students have occupied hundreds of public schools in São Paulo, protesting against the state’s decision to close schools and relocate students. The opposition of legal arguments regarding public tenure and public property questions, on the one hand, and the right to free expression, on the other, is one of the lenses to observe what has been called as the “high school spring”.
