ABSTRACT
This article aims at understanding how the dialectics of Roberto Schwarz presents itself in the form of his essay. It argues that his critique shows a keen perception for the writing of the essay by which Brazilian literature and culture are analyzed and interpreted. By doing so, it re-evaluates the relation between Schwarz and the Brazilian modernism, besides recovering his own creative work like A lata de lixo da história and Corações veteranos.
