The Grounded Theory as methodological approach: reports of a field experience

As there are few articles that address issues relating to the history, types and main characteristics of grounded theory in Brazil, this paper aims to further the discussion of this methodological approach as a way of doing research. More specifically, the paper describes a field experience, and in particular the history of a researcher involved with the challenge of putting grounded theory into practice. The work is divided into three distinct parts. First we present grounded theory broadly, introducing some of its fundamental principles. Secondly the field work that was done is described- in the manner of grounded theory - so as to investigate how the Brazilian consumers from the more popular classes live their experiences of consumers of electronic products. In the third and final section we present some reflections on the practical requirements for the "operationalization" of research committed to the "spirit" of grounded theory, as well as the doubts, dilemmas, difficulties and anxieties experienced throughout the process research told by those who faced them.
