Parents and teenagers relationships - strategies to prevent risks

To prevent behavioral deviation is one recent strategy. Conflictive familiar relationship, bad school performance and low value assigned to life are risk factors that many times can be associated to the context in which the development takes place. This study had as objective to consider some factors associated to familiar relationship that could affect teenager's behavior. The sample was composed by 317 students, of a middle town size public high school. Subjects were 143 males and 174 females, classified in two groups: initial adolescence (15 - 17 years old) and final adolescence (18 - 21 years old). One inventory describing aspects of teenager's and family's lives was applied asking questions about the family (part 1) and by a checklist that contained aspects related to stressful events (part 2), adapted from W.K.Kellogg Foundation's inventory named "Familia y Adolescência: Indicadores de Salud". Results are analyzed according to sex and age variables and they cover aspects such as the level of satisfaction in mother and father relationship, healthy and stressful conditions experienced by family and teenagers' evaluation about their personal life and the teenagers' behavior, expectance and accomplish towards school. Preliminary analyses indicate that besides satisfactory family relationship, good school adjustment may be one way to prevent social and psychological risks in teenagers' groups, suggesting that risk factors early detected could have their action minimized in a re-educative process.
