The treatment of hysteria: a challenge for the network of mental health services

This paper discusses the hysteria’s diagnosis disappearance in the psychiatric manuals and thinks over the clinical consequences in the treatment of hysteria in the medical institutions and in the public services of mental health. Through the interlocution among different professionals, the challenge of the clinical practice with such cases has been launched mainly through the proposal of demedication present in the new services created by the Brazilian psychiatric reform. Sustaining the treatment of the hysteric’s symptom as something important in each case, rather than adding it to the variety classification of psychiatric symptoms, the psychoanalytic orientation indicates its contributions to the clinical investigations held in mental health services. This study presents a theoretical discussion on the freudian theory of hysteria and a review of the psychiatric literature about the treatment of hysteria.
