Journals' citacions in the psychology scientific production

Maria Imaculada Cardoso Sampaio About the author

This work analyses the dissertations and thesis presented to post-graduate programs at the University of São Paulo Psychology Institute (IPUSP), between 2000 and 2005 with the aim to identify the presence of Brazilian journals’ citations in the references. The information was collected by the IPUSP Library staff, who registered in proper data sheets the number of journals’ citations in the dissertations and thesis as well as the journals’ titles as well as the referenced year. It was also considered the degree of the research and the year of its presentation. After a review, the data were organized in electronic sheets in order to analyze the results. They showed that between 2000 and 2005 460 master’s degree works and 333 doctoral thesis submitted their research, what totalized 793 works. The study allows the verification of a significant increase in the scientific production of the IPUSP and in the number of journals’ citations during the recent years of the period examined. It concludes that despite the increasing number of citations from Brazilian periodical literature, it is indispensable to implement actions that could reinforce the relevance of scientific journals as knowledge registration among researchers. This kind of literature presents the state-of-the-art of the scientific community production. The study points out the urgency of greater dissemination of the scientific knowledge from Latin-American countries among researchers and post-graduates of IPUSP, since in this study it was not identified any citation of a Latin-American journal in the analyzed research works. The conclusion is that the recognition of the quality of the knowledge produced in the region will only be achieved when researchers realize that Brazilian journals deserve being read without prejudice.
